Jane Austen · 1813
Jane Austen published Pride and Prejudice in 1813, when she was thirty-seven, after revising an earlier version she had written in her early twenties. It is set among the country gentry of Regency England, where marriage, money and reputation decide a family's future, and it remains one of the most beloved novels in the language.
Austen's gift is for irony: she writes about manners and match-making with a clear eye and a dry wit, and she makes her heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, as quick-minded as she is fallible. This edition carries the sixty-seven drawings Hugh Thomson made for the 1894 illustrated printing, which helped to fix the book's image for generations of readers.
