Washington Irving · 1820
Washington Irving first published "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" in 1820 in The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. He wrote it while living in England, and it helped make him the first American author with a wide readership abroad. He frames the tale as a manuscript left by the fictional Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker, which lets him tell it with a straight face and a good deal of mischief.
Set in a drowsy Dutch valley on the Hudson, it is part ghost story, part rustic comedy and part portrait of a schoolmaster with big appetites and bigger ambitions. It is short enough to read in a sitting, and its eerie atmosphere and dry humor are why it is still one of America's best-loved tales.
