Alexandre Dumas · 1846
Alexandre Dumas published The Count of Monte Cristo as a newspaper serial between 1844 and 1846. French readers followed it week by week, and it quickly became one of the most widely read novels of the century. Dumas, already famous for The Three Musketeers, wrote with a collaborator, Auguste Maquet, and his gift for pace and suspense shows on every page.
The story opens in Marseilles in 1815, with a young sailor on the edge of a happy life. From there it widens into a long tale of justice, patience and reinvention that crosses Italy, Paris and the Mediterranean. This edition keeps the book's great set pieces and its many illustrations, and its modern-English companion makes the length easier to enjoy.
