The Call of Cthulhu

H. P. Lovecraft · 1928

"The Call of Cthulhu" first appeared in Weird Tales in February 1928 and is the story that gave a name to the Cthulhu Mythos, told through Francis Wayland Thurston's assembly of three fragments — a disturbed sculptor's shared nightmares, a police inspector's decades-old file on a swamp cult, and a Norwegian sailor's account of the drowned city of R'lyeh rising from the Pacific — building toward Lovecraft's central idea that humanity's ignorance of the universe's true, indifferent vastness is the only thing standing between it and madness.
