When these twelve stories first appeared in The Strand Magazine in 1891 and 1892, a new kind of hero stepped into English fiction. Sherlock Holmes, the consulting detective of 221B Baker Street, solves puzzles that baffle Scotland Yard by observing what others overlook, while his friend Dr. Watson, who narrates, records the cases and marvels at the method. Arthur Conan Doyle, then a young doctor with an unsteady practice, found that readers could not get enough, and the collection made both men famous.
Each story stands alone, from the king in disguise of "A Scandal in Bohemia" to the sinister household of "The Copper Beeches". Together they set the pattern for the detective story as we still know it. This volume offers the original text alongside a modern-English edition.
