One of the Six Hundred

James Grant · 1875

James Grant, himself a former army officer, was one of the most prolific British novelists of the Victorian era, and One of the Six Hundred is his fictional memoir of the Crimean War, its title drawn from Tennyson's "Charge of the Light Brigade," which he sets as the book's epigraph. Told in the first person by Lieutenant Newton Calderwood Norcliff, it follows a lancer officer's peacetime courtship and rivalries in England and Scotland before carrying him through the campaign itself — the voyage east, the Alma, captivity among the Russians, and finally Balaclava, where the famous charge he survives gives the book its name. Grant's narrator keeps a wry, self-deprecating voice even at the story's darkest turns, and the novel moves easily between drawing-room comedy, wartime horror, and an abiding homesickness for Scotland, making it as much a portrait of a soldier's inner life as of the war around him.
