This edition presents Rupert Sargent Holland's 1919 retelling of the Arthurian legends, a warm and vivid distillation of the Matter of Britain drawn chiefly from Sir James Knowles's abridgment of Malory's fifteenth-century Morte Darthur, supplemented with material from Geoffrey of Monmouth's chronicles and, for the tale of Gawain and the Maid with the Narrow Sleeves, from Chrétien de Troyes. Holland opens with his own historical introduction tracing the legend's evolution across French, English, and Victorian sources before recounting Arthur's story in four parts — the founding of the Round Table, its champions, the Quest of the Holy Grail, and the king's passing — preserving the romance's full cast of knights, its oaths and vows of chivalry, and its blend of wonder and tragedy. This transcription reproduces Holland's text exactly as printed, with a companion modern-English edition that renders its pervasive archaic grammar (thou/thee, -eth and -est verb endings) into natural contemporary prose while leaving every name, incident, and quoted verse untouched.
